Globe Scaffolding Cambridge Ltd were appointed to deliver comprehensive scaffolding and access solutions for the Eddington Development in North West Cambridge — a large, fast-paced residential scheme comprising 373 new homes.
The development included 112 timber frame houses and 261 residential units across four reinforced concrete apartment blocks. From the outset, the programme was recognised as logistically complex, with multiple construction methods being delivered concurrently across a live site environment.
Following formal instruction in November 2023, scaffold erection commenced in March 2024. The agreed programme spanned 18 months, with Globe Scaffolding responsible for the supply, erection, adaptation, inspection, and dismantling of all scaffolding and access systems across the site. All works were completed by July 2025, approximately two months ahead of the original programme.
At peak periods, up to 16 scaffold operatives were deployed, utilising more than 700 tonnes of scaffold equipment. A combination of tube and fitting scaffolding and system staircases was installed in accordance with approved design drawings, supporting both timber frame housing and reinforced concrete apartment blocks.
One of the principal challenges was the scale of the development and the requirement for all areas to be constructed simultaneously rather than in phases. This placed increased demands on labour, materials, and logistics within a live site environment. These challenges were mitigated through detailed forward planning, daily coordination meetings, and flexible resource management to respond to changing programme requirements.
Comprehensive RAMS were prepared and implemented throughout the project, with trained and competent operatives wearing appropriate PPE at all times. Regular inspections and audits supported a strong safety record, and the site operated under a considerate contractor scheme to minimise environmental impact and disruption to the surrounding community.
The successful delivery of the Eddington Development strengthened the ongoing client relationship, with discussions continuing around future works. Clear sequencing, proactive communication, and close collaboration with the principal contractor were key to delivering a large-scale, concurrent development safely, efficiently, and ahead of programme.
